Photographs by Michael Farrell and Poetry by Twyla M. Hansen"A landscape photographer working in Nebraska faces a primary challenge. Almost all the land is in private hands and fenced off with little or no access. "No trespassing!" is the most common sign seen. One is free to travel the county roads though. I printed off an Otoe County road map and went looking for examples of things that define the mid-western landscape and its inhabitants, setting these apart from the casual visitor like me. I picked Otoe County as a place to look for a couple of reasons. It was settled early in our state's history with a border on the Missouri River. Because it was a river town it had history with enslaved people brought upriver to work the docks. It played a role in the Underground Railroad. It was the eastern end of Nebraska Highway 2, a modern version of the "Nebraska City - Fort Kearny Cutoff" of the old Overland Trail. It was named for the original inhabitants, the Otoe people, who had ceded their lands in a series of treaties and who were removed to Oklahoma in the late 19th Century. All of these things were on my mind when I started out. None of them figured very much into what evolved photographically except as facts percolating in the background. After spending three years making large format black & white photographs I realized that the pictures alone wouldn't say or explain all that I was experiencing or thinking about in my many days of wandering the gravel and dirt roads looking for the remnants of the bygone. I wasn't raised in a rural or agricultural place. And although I've lived in Nebraska for fifty years, I don't think I can speak to the issues facing rural lands and people today. I decided to ask my friend, the esteemed poet Twyla Hansen, Nebraska's former State Poet, to look at the images to see if they brought anything forth to her. She responded and her poems paired here with these photographs are the result."Michael Farrell2023
