Val Russell (1925-2009), with husband Eric, arrived in Atherton in January 1946, intending to stay for twelve months. It became 'home' for almost sixty years. During that time, Val became a well-known and loved artist on the Tableland. Sketching and painting throughout North Queensland, she produced an enormous body of work which represents not only a pictorial record of place, but also a personal history. Using her sketchbooks as a guide, the story of Val's life and artistic achievements unfold in concert with the history of Atherton itself - its progress and expansion, its residents, the founding of the Atherton Art Society and development of Arts in the community.
