Description

Eileen Saint Lauren is a native Mississippian who identifies so closely with William Faulkner that she is willing to break the laws of the probable to include Faulkner as a character in her brilliantly written new novel.A story of the blended real and fantastic set in the town of Oxford, Mississippi, near Faulkner's long-time home of Rowan Oak, now located on the property of the University of Mississippi that spans from the American Civil War 1861 to Christmas Eve 1960 in Oxford, Mississippi. The setting includes typical tree-shaded antebellum Southern homes, the streets of Oxford, the town cemetery, and the campus of the university, all within a short walking distance of Faulkner's Rowan Oak and Fable Court, the fictional home of lead character Eleanor Franklin. Franklin's dwindling memory leads her into believing that she is, at times, Emily Dickinson. The tightness of the setting and the façade of small-town peacefulness deny the tormented souls who live within these houses and in the revered moss-hung environment. As Eleanor Franklin is approaching Christmas Day, which falls on her eighty-eighth birthday, she invites her only relatives to come for an extended visit and her birthday party. All the holiday trappings are present at Fable Court and invited guest William Faulkner himself becomes the honored decorator of the Christmas tree. While the prevailing tone of the story is the excitement of a party for the aging Eleanor, in fact, the polar opposite reality develops, intimated by the recurrent appearance of the Southern light. In addition to the drama of William Faulkner himself being caught up in the plot of tortured people, there are other troubled individuals--a historic Confederate American Civil War ghost and an imprisoned man-child. Also vital to the plot are an eccentric caretaker who is a Holocaust survivor and a tormented old woman who reveals her twenty-five-year secret. The haunted characters and plot seal the message of this timeless novel: "Truth can stand alone in any light but more so amid the Southern light."A study guide is included.
