Hari Dil is an orphan of the partition of India. He was only thirteen when he had to flee his family mansion in Peshawar and escape to India. There he finally settled in the town of Rampur and married Maya, the beautiful, well-educated daughter of a local stationmaster. They were living a peaceful life with their daughters when one day an old and very sick visitor showed up at their door. Hari's uncle Mehar, who was supposed to have perished in the riots, had survived and has been looking for him for decades. As the Mehar was lying in bed dying, Kadu Ram, who used to be the custodian of Hari's office, came to visit the family. On seeing Mehar, he suddenly left in haste and was not seen again for years. Mehar died a few days after he had arrived. Before his death, he took a promise from Maya to bear a son to keep the clan going. Maya prayed hard for a son. She gave birth to five daughters. In the process, she lost her health and started suffering from depression. One day, when Maya visited the old Hindu temple for prayers, a sadhu at the temple unsuccessfully tried to convince her to give up her constant prayers for a son. The sadhu contrived the couple into believing that a son will be born to them in near future but warned that she may suffer for her stubborn insistence. After giving birth to a son, they named Josh, Maya started losing her interest in life. As the boy grew up, he saw his mother's physical and mental health deteriorate. Despite Hari's best efforts, Maya commits suicide. The boy developed a strong fear of death and started dreaming about the death god Yama. Will the boy survive? Why did Kadu Ram disappear after seeing Mehar?
