Philip Stone is a middle school student trying to adjust to life after his parents' divorce and his subsequent transfer to an inner-city school best known for producing high dropout rates. What he doesn't know is that his life is about to become even more complicated. Philip's odyssey begins when a teacher loans him an ancient black book and a sound recording for use in a homework assignment that might improve Philip's grade. Philip is grateful at first, but the mysterious book and musical recording lead Philip into the strangest dream world: a world that seems quite vivid and real, and that Philip experiences as if he had actually left his bed and been transported through space and time to Ancient Greece. But that would be impossible. So why does evidence to the contrary start appearing in Philip's waking world? Philip begins to accept the impossible, and fate shows Philip some of the untapped potential in his previous experiences of time, tempo and music. It is a lesson prepared by a German music teacher many years before, and preserved in art and sound. His breakthrough compositions were derived from formulas and frequencies and performed on an instrument the music teacher crafted while hiding from the Nazis, who hunted him for the chance to harness his discoveries. What he had developed was a way for music to transport the listener through time.Philip's journey will take him from the comforts of his own time to the turbulent, often dangerous world of Ancient Greece. Philip must trust the music and his own wits, as time itself seems to converge and collapse around him, providing him more of an education than he could ever imagine.
