The Benefactors is a true story about immigrants at the border with Mexico, a pandemic, a growing white supremacist movement, a creative and driven entrepreneur, a financial crisis, conflict over public policy, civil unrest and war. But this is not a story about 2021, this story starts in the 19th Century and ends in the middle of the 20th. At the center of the story are two men, a bank, a woman who would be considered an illegal alien today, and her six children. One of the men is R.E. Olds, whose accomplishments included two automobile companies and a National bank. The other is Joseph W. Gleason, a Lansing businessman appointed receiver of Olds' bank after it failed. Soon after Gleason's appointment, he came into conflict with men who ran companies with assets and collateral frozen at the bank. There was a battle for control of the receivership. Lansing residents stood to be impacted by its outcome. Everyone in the account is real. Everything in it happened. The story recounts epic hardships, muted joys, the murder of a bank official, the power of corporate interests, a nascent labor movement, the onset of the second world war and its aftermath. One family stands in for many in Lansing who survived the Great Depression then thrived. Readers will experience a past that may seem like a foreign country where people do things differently. Drawn from news articles, New Deal history, and conversations with the 90-year-old son of Gleason's only heir, The Benefactors shows how the actions of men and women of their time reverberate into ours.
