This study is concerned with the representation of gender in James Cameron's oeuvre. I focus on his core directorial filmography, from The Terminator (1986) to Avatar (2009). My argument is that in these films gender relations constitute a recurring theme that is greatly informed by the director's own family history and internal conflicts, both in childhood and later life. Taking both an authorial and psychoanalytic perspective, I trace changes in Cameron's conceptions of masculinity and femininity over time. His short list of films created over an extended chronological period, his unique emotional history and his clear, repetitive constructions of gender make for an effective case study. While a psychoanalytic auteur study is not novel in general, this will be its first application to James Cameron's body of work, and it is my hope that such a study will contribute new insights into the world of the blockbuster auteur.
