Drawn by the mythical origin of Big Bend and an exchange professorship, Fiodor Bulovski arrives in Texas during the Carter era. He settles in Wolfe Town, from where begins his peregrinations from Texas to New York, with flashbacks to Russia. Fiodor comes into contact with his colleagues: Stanislav, Philip, Victor, and Marna, the local poetess. Prudish Marna falls in love with him; Victor betrays his homosexual leanings; Stanislav is suspected of murder; and Philip and Emmy go through the agony of a disjointed marriage. New York remains the other pole of Fiodors adventures. But the atmosphere of degradation to which he is exposed in the Big Apple is nothing compared to what, in Dallas, is the secret life of shy Victor. Staged around the ordeals of the characters, Texas oscillates between rattlers-shakers and political bigots, incestuous cowboys and Southern secessionists, a tornados horrors and the bewitching beauty of Big Bend. At the end, a spiritual tornado crashes upon everyone.
