Emma is married to Mike. Mike inherits his aunt's house 'Lockwood' in the village of Lockwood. Mike persuades Emma to give up their home in London and move to Lockwood, which Emma at first is reluctant to do as she doesn't want to leave her native London and all close friends. Mike and Emma's marriage is a little stale and Emma then thinks that maybe the move would be a good thing to put a spark back in to their marriage. Mike has already been to Lockwood and arranged for the house to be restored to some order together with the lake that lay in the grounds. After moving in to Lockwood Emma is left to her own devices are Mike makes the daily commute back to his office in London. Emma is a writer and she thinks that she may take some inspiration from Lockwood although she is feeling lonely and isolated. Mike and Emma have befriended the landlady of the village pub 'Trish'. When sinister happenings start with a vision at the lake tragedies then follow and Emma starts to questions whether it is all in her mind or whether something more sinister is going on. Emma starts to rely heavily on Trish as her marriage starts to crumble and Mike accuses her of being an ungrateful wretch. Mike turns cold towards Emma and she starts to wonder whether Mike is having an affair with the girl in the office Jennifer. Emma becomes paranoid and coupled with the ghostly events that increase at the house will Emma is drawn in to a battle between the darkness and the light as she hits the bottle for comfort and courage much to Mike's distaste. Will Emma win her battle? Will their marriage survive? Do ghosts exists? Can they really harm the living and what is the secret that the house and the lake hold?
