The God-centered Life is a collection of twenty-five letters of spiritual counsel written by the remarkable French Archbishop Francois Fenelon. Last published in English nearly fifty years ago, these letters have been selected, edited and introduced by Keith Chandler, author of several influential books, including Beyond Civilization and The Mind Paradigm, because of his belief that they will help fill a gap in the life of contemporary Christians. Unlike most classics of Christian spirituality, Fenelon?s letters are not directed to cloistered monks and nuns but to members of the court of Louis XIV, some of whom were intent on leading a devout life despite the luxury, ostentation and ego-centered obsessions of the "Sun King?s" court. Noting that modern American society, despite its democratic foundation, is nevertheless characterized by many of the same obsessions, Chandler found in his own life that even after three centuries Fenelon is a reliable and practical guide about how to fulfill St. Paul?s counsel: "Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."The God-centered Life contains no theological arguments and no sermonizing, only simple, direct and compassionate guidance on how to align one?s own will with that of God. Chandler?s introduction includes tips on three ways to use the book: (1) As a guide to the choices we make in everyday life; (2) As a focus for small groups in churches to meet on a regular basis and share paragraph by paragraph as an exercise in self-examination and better acquaintance with the God within, and (3) As a source of "lections," brief readings to begin individual meditation sessions. While he does not disparage the value many Christians have found in spiritual practices derived from other sources, he feels the wisdom of Francois Fenelon is a resource from within the Christian tradition that ought not to be lost.
