The National Round Table held a workshop in 1995 to examine ways to integrate sustainable development considerations more fully into the Halifax Summit of the Group of Seven nations. This report is based mainly on the presentations of speakers at that workshop but also incorporates some of the background material prepared prior to the workshop. Chapter 1 addresses some questions of international institutional reform required to deal with sustainable development issues subsequent to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Chapter 2 traces the deliberations and decisions on environmental and development issues at Group of Seven summits from 1975 to 1994, with a focus on Canada's contribution. Chapter 3 assesses Canadian preparations for the Halifax Summit and chapter 4 suggests ways that the Round Table could contribute to the Summit agenda. Chapters 5 and 6 consider international financial institutions and environmental implications their activities. Chapters 7 and 8 examine issues relating to international trade, development, and environment. Chapters 9 and 10 discuss the need for a new international organization to manage the world's environment. The final three chapters present US, German, and Japanese perspectives on the Halifax Summit.
