Benedict of Nursia chose to become a hermit but as his holiness and lifestyle became known, people came to him and he was asked to become an abbot by a small community of monks. This was not to last as he was too strict for them. Later, in about 525, after spending some time in Subiaco he settled at Monte Cassino. It was here that disciples flocked to him and he was to build his first monastery. He organized the monks into a single monastic community and wrote this Rule prescribing common sense, a life of moderate asceticism, prayer, study, work, and community life under one superior. It stresses obedience, stability, and has the Divine Office as the center of monastic life. This Rule was to become a central tenet of monastic communities in the West and is still used by many monastic orders today.
