Columbus made a detailed exploration of modern day Cuba, Hispaniola, and the surrounding islands, and wrote daily and in great detail about the lands he discovered and their inhabitants, and their potential to his Spanish sponsors.This journal must rank as one of the most important documents in the history of geographical discovery. The original remains of this invaluable manuscript are now lost, but by researching into the old chronicles of Spain by Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish historian who had access to Columbus' writings, amongst others, the eminent Victorian geographer and writer Sir Clements Markham has produced a highly readable and plausible account of Columbus' journey into the unknown.
