Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist. He wrote for the Whigs and then for the Tories. His best-known works are Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, and A Tale of a Tub. The Journal to Stella concerns letters to Esther Johnson (1681 1728). When Swift moved to Moor Park he met the eight year old Esther. Swift was 22 and became the teacher and companion of the little girl. While Swift was a clergyman and also while in London he wrote to Esther. In 1716 there was an alleged marriage to Esther.
