Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet is known for founding America's first deaf school, and so naturally scholars have focused on his various roles within the framework of deaf studies. Most scholars generally understand him to be a committed Christian and even recognize his motivation to establish a deaf school as part of a Christian mission to educate deaf people with the evangelical gospel in the Second Great Awakening. However, very little attempt has been made to understand his theology behind this mission and throughout his life. Other areas of benevolent or reform activities in his life have been sorely neglected as well. This study explores Gallaudet's theology and historical context within and beyond his work with the deaf by connecting his religious historical surroundings to his own life, surveying key doctrines he learned from his studies at Yale and Andover Seminary, and demonstrating how his theological upbringing and education was applied to his various works in benevolence and social reform. A firmer grasp of Gallaudet's theology will bring greater understanding to his writings, works, and life.
