This is the story of a young Confederate soldier, George Roots Clayton Wilson, who was 18-years-old and hailed from Montgomery, Alabama. In January 1861, Clayton left his parents large, comfortable home in Montgomery to join other Alabama troops at Fort Morgan on the Mobile Bay. Clayton fought in the first land battle of the war at Laurel Mountain in northwestern Virginia and went on to fight the last major battle that resulted in the surrender of General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. During this time, he wrote many letters home from those battlefields and encampments, serving under Generals Bragg, Garnett, Loring, Stonewall Jackson, Longstreet and Lee. A living family descendant of this young Confederate soldier took Clayton's diary and re-enacted his journey home some 131 years later. This is a story about dedication to duty, endurance, tenacity and the setting aside of fear.
