The story is set in 1907 towards the end of the Belle Époque era within a commune of the Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany in north-western France. Monsieur Antoine Du Bois is an emerging impressionist artiste, following in the footsteps of Monet and Renoir who retreats to Lanvallay after being rejected from the Parisian art salons for being non-conformist, and finds himself travelling to England to further his career. After accepting patronage for an English Art Trust, he travels home and finds peace and the love of his life, Camille. Together with his old, trusty friend, monsieur Gagnier, a trained horseman, they surprisingly unfurl the talents of Fifi, one of Antoine's mares whom they train with René, the neighbour's son and aspiring jockey, and enter her into the Parisian steeple-chase races. The novel culminates in a winning formula that sees Antoine's life changed forever as they surge forward, overcoming obstacles in life and culminates in a riveting climactic life-changing end.
