Description

"A lengthy but charmingly illustrated tale of friendship"-Kirkus ReviewsThis beautifully illustrated picture storybook continues the adventures of the squirrel family first introduced in the book, The Goose that Fell from the Sky. It begins with middle-child Hazel skipping out on spring-cleaning to visit her new favorite place, the marsh. "It's a world where squirrels cannot go," she sighs and promptly falls into the water. Malcolm, a mysterious young muskrat who lives in the marsh, rescues her. She soon discovers he is on his own in the world. "But I'm not an orphan," he asserts. "I've just lost my family." She shares the encounter with her parents, older brother Wally, and baby brother Wingnut. She describes Malcolm as "the saddest person I've ever met. His eyes are sad. His home is sad. Sad, sad, sad." The squirrels work together to help make Malcolm's crude lodge into something of a home, but how to find his family? After a monthly test of the tornado siren, a sound that terrifies Malcolm, Hazel learns it was a tornado that tore Malcolm away from his home. He could be miles and miles from his family. Hazel gets an idea. At a scouting jamboree she enlists fellow Tree Toppers to look for Malcolm, even including pesky young Almond a new Tree Topper Hazel is assigned to watch over. But the summer passes. Each night Malcolm calls his special muskrat call, hoping to hear from his family. Will he ever find them? The answer comes from an unexpected place.
