Teenagers grew up with tales of the Civil War, and tales of the outlaws and bandits who seemed to embody the very spirit and rebellion of the young; it was a temptation that many found impossible to resist. A female outlaw masquerades as a man, and the only person smart enough to catch her is a fourteen year old girl, who actually does so most unwitttingly, and quite by accident. This is a strange time for women in this country; the Civil War had women masquerading as men in the armies of the North, and the South, and women grew to become very self-sufficient during this time period. Yet, there is a desire in women to rediscover the feminine, and to celebrate the power that is femininity as it is found naturally, in the woman. This conflict, then, is between our two main characters; both of whom are young and looking for excitement, all the while wanting to stay grounded, and to develop the age-old attributes of their sex for the benefit of their own development, and experience. The call of the male world is strong, but just how strong is it, after all is said and done? The call to a life of crime is overwhelming in its excitement, yes, but for how long? Our two lead characters go back and forth between the male and female worlds, and between the legal and the criminal worlds, until they finally decide upon which side they would like to remain. This is a very different kind of a Western novel; It is a Western that crosses a few genre lines, and develops the main characters in surprising ways. Taking its cues from the works of the Clint Eastwood style of westerns, in that the characters are strange, yet interesting, and full of unusual connections one to another, it also uses the surprising device of female lead characters to develop the story line, and offers a story of the old West that could have very well actually happened. A few post-Civil War comments and mentions do not neglect to show that this period of the Old West was just after the great War Between The States, and that the old differences do indeed die hard, but can, in the end, be overcome.
