In the 1830s and '40s several families living in the mid-south move northward for a better life and to escape the evils of slavery. Matthew Miller escapes death in Nat Turner's 1831 Slave Rebellion in Virginia. Sarah Quick and Joshua Henderson come from two areas of Kentucky, and the Campbells, Scots-Irish immigrants, join them at the confluence of Bear creek and Bean Blossom in south-central Indiana. Several men of the next generation fight the Civil War. Young Dave Baker, Will Campbell and Reuben Henderson join the 27th Indiana Infantry Regiment. We follow them through the battles of Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Sherman's march to Atlanta. Then, drafted 33 year-old Henry Miller joins the 25th Indiana on Sherman's march to the sea. At war's end, Henry's little sister, Mattie, marries young returning vet, Will. We then follow her adventurous life. A liberal before her time, she helps ex-slaves find employment, tries to tame Rapid City gold rush miners. After Will falls with Custer she spends an idyllic winter in New Orleans. Then she and husband # 2, Billy O'Doyle, grow wealthy as St. Louis hotel proprietors, survive the devastating cyclone of 1896 and entertain unexpected guests during the Exposition of 1904. After Billy's sudden death, her interrupted idyllic New Orleans romance resumes in middle age. The book ends in 1932 with the death of Reuben, the last GAR vet of her home county, and Mattie campaigns for her latest cause as a sprightly 81 year-old, fighting the Great Depression.
