Elizabeth M. Latham is a Reiki Master and a retired nurse practitioner. In 1993, Latham had a mystical experience in the form of a dream that prompted her to embark on a quest for the history of Reiki, a Japanese healing art. She travelled to Japan in 1993 and 1994 to re-search Mikao Usui, the alleged founder of Reiki. Based on her findings, she immediately began authoring The Samurai Reiki Master, in 1993-2023, shedding new light on the history of Reiki. This history begins in 1873 during the Meiji era when the Japanese authorities lifted the ban on Christianity. Subsequently, the Japanese be-came interested in Jesus' divine healing through the laying on of hands. This was the onset for a quest on how to obtain such an ability. Rev. J.T. Yokoi (Tokio Yokoi 1857-1927) succeeded in developing a ritual for baptism with the Holy Spirit appropriate to Japanese religious and spiritual culture, which activates the innate healing capacity of a devout believer. The ritual of baptism became known as initiation: giving Reiki, mirroring John 20:22 in the Bible, '(...) Receive the Holy Spirit. 'For Reiki practitioners, the founder's name is Mikao Usui (1865-1926). However, results of research conducted by Latham indicate that with bordering probability, it was Tokio Yokoi who founded this healing method, fundamentally grounded in the biblical story of Jesus, under the pseudonym Mikao Usui. This book recounts in detail the life and work of Tokio Yokoi describing among others where and when he encountered Christianity, was baptised, became an ordained congregational minister, and how he accomplished his search for that special form of baptism with the Holy Spirit. Hence, this book invites the reader to reconsider the status quo regarding Reiki history. Lastly, Latham theorizes why Yokoi was compelled to use a pseudonym.
