This is your story. If you have a family link to the Piedmont or Blue Ridge Mountains of the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee, or Georgia, no doubt you carry genes of 6th century wandering warriors who left Ireland for the Lowlands of Scotland and returned to Ulster as good Presbyterians in the 1600's. There they found even more violence and left for the western frontier of Virginia and the Carolinas in the 18th century just in time for the American Revolution. THE SCOTS-IRISH by Maurice Thomas tells our story in a lively prose poem with maps and beautiful photographs of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Lake District, the mountains and Piedmont of the Carolinas. It's a condensed history spanning the centuries from William Wallace to Davy Crockett, the siege of Derry to Over-the-Mountain Men at Kings Mountain, Falkirk to Appomattox, from Puritans persecution to Junior Johnson and Prohibition along with Scots-Irish presidents, generals, explorers, Cherokee warriors, country singers, even a recipe for haggis, It is filled with the names of our neighbors- Anderson, Bell, Carter, Craig, Collins, Duncan, Fletcher, Gordon, Johnson, Kerr, Little, McMillan, McCain, McWhorter, McCorkle, Montgomery, Napier, Osborne, Patterson, Richardson, Ross, Stevenson, Thompson, Walker, Wallace, Young, and your name, too. This is a family treasure that also includes a place to keep your own genealogy. Maurice Thomas is a native of North Carolina who divides his time between Union and Alleghany Counties. A writer, teacher, and history buff, Thomas is the author of several family genealogies and three poetry collections including BRANCHES (2012).
