Description

In The Seeing-Glass, heart speaks to heart and soul speaks to soul. What began as a 40-day Lenten journey with sacred texts from diverse wisdom traditions [Christian, Zen, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Native American, etc.] as walking sticks and guideposts became both an epiphany and a manuscript. Having joined a Monastery of the Heart, a monastic movement of seekers, formed by the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, the author vowed to practice Lectio Divina [Divine Reading] each day. Lectio is an ancient prayer practice used widely by desert mothers [ammas] and fathers [abbas] during the 3rd-5th centuries, refined by St. Benedict of Nursia in the 6th century, and practiced worldwide by present day contemplatives. Dr. Bielowski's mission was to read the designated passage intentionally and reverentially; sit with it, savor it, sink within it, until a sentence or two began to stir and shimmer. After opening herself to its rapt voice, the author was to record its message in a personal reflection. Reflections came in the form of poems-she daydreamed and sleepwalked with them as ever-present companions. Gradually, the poems took on a rhythm and regularity akin to the Liturgy of the Hours. When Dr. Linda L. Bielowski feared the writer's void, much to her amazement, she received the holy gift of an image, metaphor, allegory, or complete verse-dayafter-day-after-day. In a time experiencing a resurgence of interest and curiosity about contemplative prayer and seeking the God who reigns within, The Seeing-Glass is not intended to be a monolithic "how-to" manual for the prayer life. The author used to worry about the correct way to pray, stretching to glean its secret until she realized that often her most effectual prayer was a simple smile given to rainfall on dry grass. In the authors own words: 'If the book prompts you, the reader, to learn more about Benedictine spirituality and its 1500 year history-along with its enduring relevance-you will anoint my work with the oil of worthiness. If it propels you to dig deep and deeper seeking the God who reigns within, to find God in the quotidian, and to sit in your cell for the answers to the eternal questions of our divine comedy, you will bless and embolden it further. You will put flesh on the book's dry bones. For this, I celebrate you!"
