Andrew Samuels was a mountain faith healer who lived alongside the Hiawassee River in Clay County, North Carolina. A devout and dedicated Christian, he practiced what he preached. JB Smith, as a young boy, watched the man and his faith in action. He carefully observes the old man and his ability to talk to God and personally witnesses miracles. While in college, Samuels is killed, and Smith serves as a pallbearer in a traditional mountain funeral. Smith's faith grows initially, but he becomes a Soldier and begins seeing the world through a Soldier's eyes. Throughout his travels, he remembers the long dead Mr. Samuels and his faith. He sharpens his skills for his own survival but becomes detached from his own family. He was unwittingly involved in the destruction of a strategic target in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1999, accompanies a CIA team into Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks, and conducts strategic reconnaissance of Iraq prior to the invasion of that country. The stress of the missions increases, and he reaches to his family. He longs for his retirement from military service hoping to return to Clay County and raise his children. Finally within reach of his goal, tragedy strikes. He begins to see things that are dreamlike and surreal. Is it real, is it post-traumatic stress, or is it God trying to get his attention?
