Description

Tim Lensley and Connor Cooper are roommates at Hampton University, in Virginia. Connor is gifted with photographic memory and Tim, bright but far less gifted, must learn by arduously pushing important information into his brain. In one of his classes, Tim hears a fascinating story involving a secret message in a book that is 500 years old. He and his professor attempt to decipher the message but encounter parts that they can't interpret. Their efforts lead them to the person who originally gave the book to the Hampton library, the one who tells the story of her family, beginning with its origin in 18th century Africa. The Treasure of Wash Woods is her story and the story of her family. The ancient city of Timbuktu (now located in Mali) is about twelve miles north of the Niger River, which winds 2,600 miles from the Guinea Highlands to the Gulf of Guinea in the south. Eighteenth century England, the world leader in trade, did business with the skilled artisans near Timbuktu. This is the catalyst for two young siblings, Nb'adon and his sister Nbiefe, to receive an offer to live in Bristol, England, where they anticipate a lucrative career. When this endeavor fails, they become indentured servants of a wealthy Englishman in the American colonies. The nephew of this man emigrates to the colonies when his father dies and becomes emotionally attracted to Nbiefe, the beautiful African indentured servant. He discovers a distressing truth about his uncle that threatens to destroy all his hopes for a life in the colonies, and this experience leads to his being deeded a farm on the Virginia Outer Banks, near a place called Wash Woods. Contrary to Virginia law, he marries Nbiefe and the two of them, along with her brother Nb'adon, build a life close to this tiny town on the outer banks. The stories that follow include life-changing experiences with the Powhattan Indians, a store keeper who is intolerable, a preacher who loves and encourages them, a group of treasure hunters, a jealous trader, a dreadful lynching, and a horrible encounter with two British army deserters. Two children are born, Panji and Diarra, and their contributions to the story are poignant. As the account progresses, a surprise change in the identity of an ex-slave alters the narrative and explores the development of a family whose influence reaches all the way from the 18th century into the future, in the year 2085.
