Description

Libretto only, complete book and lyrics. One of Victor Herbert's first successes, "The Wizard of the Nile" was hailed by Cosmopolitan Magazine as the "triumph of the season." After its Broadway production, the musical opened in London to good reviews and returned to American for a lengthy tour. In the musical, the Egyptian King offers Cleopatra's hand in marriage to anyone who can end the drought plaguing the land. A traveling wizard takes up the challenge resulting in the comical complications that follow. At the time of his death, Harry Bache Smith had written the librettos or lyrics for some 300 productions with as many as five musicals running on Broadway in the same year. He provided librettos for the greatest composers of the era including Jerome Kern, Sigmund Romberg, Irving Berlin, and John Philip Sousa and authored 14 librettos to Victor Herbert's scores including the classic "Sweethearts." Through the years Smith wrote in a variety of styles from operetta ("Cherry Blossoms"), pantomime ("The Crystal Slipper") and 1920s book musicals ("Betty, Be Good"). His 1887 "The Begum" was one of the first American operettas in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan. His 1890 "Robin Hood" with composer Reginald De Koven had nine separate Broadway productions and was produced regular into the 1960s. Published as part of Theatre Arts Press Historical Libretto Series.
