"What an incredible book you have written! The overall arrangement of essays and the thread that ties them together--things in your pockets--is a good one. It makes sense to the reader, and gets the reader thinking about the items in their pockets. The opening essay about how you came to this idea for the book is a powerful one. There's a lot of loss, a lot of near misses, and a lot of hope in this book. The things in our pockets--literally and metaphorically--bear witness to the tragedies, hope to prevent future losses, and are symbols of the many experiences we carry with us through life. I like that you name so many people. In some ways, this story is about connecting the people whose support has buoyed you to where you are today. You are obviously smart, talented, clever, innovative, and entrepreneurial. And you like to be these things in the company of others. By naming your friends and mentors you demonstrate the power of having peers and mentors in your life who can serve different roles. You also lean heavily into your family--reading about your family history was interesting, and if you haven't already shared this with your parents, I know they would like to read it. Ethan, I'm very sorry for the terrible loss that you and your family have suffered through. It's been a dark few years as we have struggled through politics and the pandemic, and you have such a deep personal loss on top of it all. Writing is a great way to process and remember. You'll always have this book to come back to so you can see where you are today and where you have been. Years from now, when you'll be living somewhere else, doing something else, spending time with new people and old friends, you'll be able to read this account and remember how you felt writing it and what it represents. I am proud of you for telling your story and for asking the hard questions. I know that you will go on to impact so many people as they work through the hardest days and weeks of their lives. You matter just because you're you, and you will help others believe that, too."
