Uncle Raymond's Garden is a memoir of the author's childhood summers in Newport R.I. in the 1940's. Her mother, one of eight siblings, was the only one to leave Newport. She became a nurse, married the author's father, a born and bred New Yorker. Every summer of her youth the author and her brother stayed at her Nana's home, surrounded by seven aunts and uncles and many cousins. The story recaptures this large Irish Catholic family, their diffuse personalities, quirks and humor. She recalls a Newport when the very rich were still in residence in the mansions on Bellevue Avenue where she often visited with an aunt or uncle in service, and the post war Naval presence in the rambunctious uptown. The inspiration for this memoir came after the death of the last of her aunts and uncles, her favorite, Uncle Raymond, the baby of the family.
