Description

The 1950s and '60s saw the beginning of a revolution that would sweep the world. Where, to some extent, jazz had gone before, the music born of the collision between country blues and American industrialisation began its conquest of artificial barriers of race, culture, nation and continent, electrifying and mobilising youth and youthful like nothing before. Britain was especially receptive to the new sound after two grinding wars and the austerity and rationing of their aftermath. The culture was old and tired and drab and grey. It was time for some fun and games and a bit of rebellion. At the time there was no thought of the future. Unlike the fusty old classics, this music and everything that went with it was about 'now'. No one could guess that it would live on from generation to generation; that it would be revered in its place. Many of its practitioners had never shown much interest in music before, never mind played an instrument. And perhaps one of the most surprising legacies of all from that time is the number of those kids who, without any formal training, came to be pretty good players, some famous in their time and not a few world-class legends. No need to import 'celebrities' back then. Every town and city had its home grown skiffle, rock 'n' roll and beat groups, none more so than Bradford. Here the scene was vibrant, and many stalwarts remained in the business, often moving from group to group, entertaining audiences and keeping the music alive right into the new millennium. Others had a briefer stay in the spotlight, and there must be thousands from all over who pawned their Telecasters, Vox Continentals, Gibsons, Precisions, Pearls and Ludwigs and returned to relative obscurity. Fortunately for Bradford, not much got past Derek A.J. Lister (Dal Stevens), who was not only on the scene but of it, and whose mammoth research undertaking has produced this compendium of who was who, where, when and for how long, illustrated throughout with images that bring it all back. Prepare to travel again through those sharp-suited, winkle-pickered, dirndle-skirted, high-energy dance hall days on the edge of innocence into the never-had-it-so-good mini-dressed ultra-violet-lighted early '60s before national TV and radio caught on and the rock 'n' roll dream turned to bingo. It's all here - the songs, the clothes, the faces, the places, the memories and the unique magic of the time when Bradford rocked.
