The proper relationship between technology and churches has become an often-debated issue, drawing wide differences of opinions. But calling this discussion a debate is a bit of an exaggeration since the subject of technology in many churches has become settled one way or the other to many. How controversial, much more than I believe it should be.This relationship should not be confused with variations in how the Church and individual churches relate. The interaction between churches and technology is neither simple nor the result of this modern era alone. After much scrutiny it is clear that the bonds between them date back to the earliest days of humanity. So, reducing the dispute to a return to the good ole days ignores much of how the world has changed.Unlike in society at large, the adoption of technology within churches had much less to do with productivity gains and adoption by society. It turs out that Church leaders were rightfully concerned with the effects on human interaction and how we revalued human efforts. Some have feared that we might experience a loss of human identity and diminished individual self-worth due to technology. Another concern was how technology might interfere with lines of authority, especially when it comes to churches.Although such fears may have had a legitimate basis, failure to understand the full range of relevant issues subsequently leads to unsupported conclusions with unintended consequences. This is where this book can be helpful. The intent is to provide a useful context for church leaders to understand the issues and make better decisions. Finally, there is the metaverse, the imaginative manifestation of the Internet as a single, universal virtual world. The metaverse takes on added significance if the Internet qualifies as a place. That means that in keeping with the Theology of Place, the metaverse can indeed be a location to meet the Lord! So, why should technology matter to my church? Let's see!
