After the war ended in 1945 our patriotic identity was erased and in the eyes of our Czechoslovakian country men, we were 'Nazis' because we spoke German. It was then I lost track of our long-time neighbours, Frau Klempt and her two sons. Because her husband had been a high ranking Nazi officer they would have been singled out for special attention... the sudden disappearance of the entire family takes on a sinister aspect. Pockets of Nazis left behind in Czechoslovakia, sent by Hitler to help groom the important citizens of the local area in the new ideals, knew they would be soon be killed if not by the incoming Soviets, then by the Czechs. They realized that in order to survive they had to immediately and successfully, escape into Germany or Austria. I made a grave and nearly fatal error in judgment, perhaps because I was only eight years old and easily impressed, when I got caught up with them in their desperate flight to safety. Later, having used up at least one of God's personally arranged miracles to rescue me from peril, I became part of the nine million ethnic Germans, citizens of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary who were punished for being of German ancestry. It did not matter that as 'foreign citizens' we had nothing to do with elevating Hitler to power... two million ethnic Germans died and only seven million survived with the clothes on their backs and twenty-five pounds of belongings to become flüchtling German citizens. (Just think, the entire ethnic population of North America could be exiled to the countries of their ancestors leaving behind an elated group of Aboriginals! The pandemonium would unbalance the world).
