"17 Sheikh Hamza Street, Cairo" takes the reader on a journey of scents, colors, sounds and feelings, telling the true story of a brave Jewish family during the first half of the twentieth Century. Fortuna and Passy, the parents of three growing children, work hard in their small sewing shop in the very center of Cairo. Life is relatively safe and prosperous until World War II arrives at the gates of Cairo and local nationalism begins to surge. The quiet streets become hostile and turbulent, shattering the family's routine. Moise becomes a Communist and is persecuted by the authorities; Sophie rebels against her parents and marries Henri, a Zionist activist, and Suzy, the youngest, is seduced by Hosni, a charming Arab criminal who forces himself upon her and threatens to harm the family. The declaration of the state of Israel in 1948, only worsens the situation of the family. Henri, Sophie's husband, is arrested and taken to a concentration camp in the desert. The family's life in Egypt becomes impossible until the inevitable expulsion. While the novel is the personal story of the author's family, it also relates the tragic fate of hundreds of thousands Jewish families that prospered in Arab states and were forced to leave their beloved homeland. * Avraham Bar-Av's historical novel is filled with humor and wisdom that to the last page sweeps the reader into its world. 17 Sheikh Hamza Street, Cairo is one of the most fascinating novels ever written about the Jews of Egypt in the 20th century. Avraham Bar-Av has succeeded in drawing a precise, empathetic picture of Jewish life in this unusual community... Bar-Av manages at once to describe the macro and micro lives of a typical Jewish family in Egypt... Fabulously well-written, this compelling book has the reader turning the pages for more."
