Description

If ever a person demonstrated the unstoppable power of Spirit, Helen Keller would certainly be an outstanding model. On June 27, 1880, Helen Adams Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Having lost her sight and hearing ability at the age of 19 months, she learned with the help of her remarkable teacher and friend, Anne Sullivan, how to communicate...and what a truly prolific communicator she became. Keller was well educated and at the age of 24 she graduated, cum laude, from Radcliffe College. During her years of study there, Keller authored the first of her twelve books entitled, The Story of My Life, which was later made into a movie called, The Miracle Worker. Despite her physical disabilities, Helen Keller consistently demonstrated enlightened intelligence, courage and astute optimism. Helen Keller dedicated her life to making a strikingly positive difference in the world. She was known for being an outspoken activist for change in the laws surrounding women's rights, people with various disabilities, social justice- ships, and labor rights. Helen was an avid animal lover, a member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World. Her accomplishments were recognized worldwide. In the states, she received the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal (1936), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964) and, in 1965, she was elected to the Women's Hall of Fame. Harvard University and Temple University also awarded her honorary doctoral degrees. Internationally, she was named an Honorary Fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland and received honorary degrees from the universities of Delhi, India; Berlin, Germany; Glasgow, Scotland; and Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. For this and so much more, she is truly an inspiring iconic being. At the end of her life, she suffered a series of strokes and on June 1, 1968 she passed away in her sleep at her home in Connecticut. Our goal with this book is to bring the words and knowledge of Helen Keller into everyone's life, piece by piece, little bit by little bit. But our vision does not end there, and Keller is not the only source for a further opened mind: you are. The second key component is your journaling. The design of this book intends for Keller to be highlighted for a moment of each day and for you to take a moment in your own often busy schedule to highlight yourself, by journaling in the accompanying pages.
