This book traces the outline of Romanticism around Priestley, his experiments, and associated literary criticism. Jeremy Marousis-Bush begins with a clear, two pronged argument framed on the idea that Joseph Priestley and his scientific experiments had a profound influence on the Romantic poets and also takes on M. H. Abrams' classic literary criticism in Natural Supernaturalism. This book first seeks to prove that the poets of the Romantic era were profoundly affected by Joseph Priestley's scientific experiments on the nature of common air gases, specifically oxygen, and that his landmark publication of Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air caused them to reconsider the air and natural world around them. Priestley's publications were widely distributed in large part due to his innovative publisher Joseph Johnson, who also published books from many of the Romantic poets. The second goal of this book is to argue against Abrams' fraternal canonical musings in which he creates an exclusionary men's club of Romantic poets. Marousis-Bush argues that Romantic poetry is not exclusively male and does not only fall to the "major" poets listed in Abrams' A Glossary of Terms. Marousis-Bush enlists the help of Susan J. Wolfson's theories of interconnectedness and reciprocal reliance in Romantic Interactions and Gerald P. Tyson's circles of influence in Joseph Johnson: A Liberal Publisher. Marousis-Bush creates a circle of influence construct in which Priestley's influence flows in an increasingly diminished capacity away from his person outward to a group of Romantic poets, both male and female, who, in turn, reflect Priestley's influence in their poetic works.
