Description

In an attempt to make sense of both A Japanese Nightingale as a literary text and Winnifred Eaton as a historical figure, I turned to the library's database. I found an informative and illuminating article on Eaton which details her personal history and literary career, written by Yuko Matsukawa. The piece also explores the publishing and production process of Eaton's books. The article, titled "Winnifred Eaton: Overview," paints Eaton as a sympathetic figure, stating that her writing persona, "suggests that Eaton not only catered to the popular reading audience's desire for orientalist romances but also used this literary masquerade as a strategy to combat the anti-Chinese sentiment" (Matsukawa). As discussed in class, events must be analyzed in the larger historical context that they took place within. For Eaton, assuming the role of Onoto Watanna and catering to her American audiences with orientalist texts was a strategy to achieve financial security and notoriety during a period where this success was relatively unattainable for women of color. As the article details, Eaton's persona and her works were manufactured for public consumption, appealing to Western fantasies regarding Asia. I also thought the author's note about combatting anti-Chinese sentiment was interesting. What do we make of Eaton assuming another racial identity to avoid the hostility directed towards Chinese-Americans at the time? The parallels between Eaton and Yuki from A Japanese Nightingale are abundant; both are biracial, both assume a character to take advantage of Western expectations, both make sacrifices in order to financially support their families. To summarize the sentiments of the article with a single quote, Matsukawa ends by stating, "Winnifred Eaton merits our attention because she makes visible, through her self-representation and texts, not only the choices that women writers of color had to make in order to make themselves heard at the turn of the century but also the constructed nature of literary identity" (Matsukawa). Although I feel the article complicates my feelings further, it provides valuable insight to the life and work of one of the first Asian-American writers, even if that work was built on falsities. The themes explored within Eaton's literature - identity, interracial romance, gender, exoticism - suggest a larger awareness and sense of criticism directed towards both her readers and the institutions she writes about. In this way, I feel the article argues that Eaton used her genre-constrained work as a vehicle to voice her concerns and criticisms, however subtle, regarding gender roles, racism, and stereotypes in Western society. Whatever your feelings towards Winnifred Eaton are, I recommend reading the article as it a highly informative examination of the Chinese author's complicated legacy.
