In 1796, former captive Matthew Bunn (1772-1843) would publish a short, 45-page narrative of how he survived months with the hostile Miami tribe under the lengthy title "A Journal of the Adventures of Matthew Bunn, a Native of Brookfield, Massachusetts, Who Enlisted with Ensign John Tillinghast, of Providence, in the Year 1791, on an Expedition into the Western Country, Was Taken by the Savages." In explaining how he came to be in contact with the hostile Miami tribe, Bunn writes: "Being about the age of nineteen years, I enlisted under Ensign JOHN TILLINGHAST, of Providence, so an expedition against the Indians in the year 1791.... Then we received orders to march for the Miamis..." About the author: Matthew Bunn was born May 29, 1772, and died September 26, 1843. He served in the Indian wars subsequent to the revolution, was captured by the Indians at St. Clair's defeat and remained with them several years. After suffering many hardships at their hands, he made his escape, and afterwards published a narrative of his captivity.
