Lemuel (L.) Nelson Bell (18940́31973), was an important figure in at least two chapters of the American evangelical story. The first concerns his involvement as an influential lay leader in the Southern Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS) in the decades prior to reunification with its Northern counterpart, the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUS) in 1983. As founder and editor of the influential Southern Presbyterian Journal, Bell helped to mold opinion among Southern Presbyterians on a range of contemporary issues. The second stems from his relationship with Billy Graham (as father-in-law and, according to Graham, mentor) and his work for the influential periodical of the then-emerging neo-evangelical movement, Christianity Today. In both capacities Bell was a staunch advocate for a conservative understanding of Christian orthodoxy, which he saw as threatened by the increasing theological liberalism of the American church, especially his own. This thesis examines Bell0́9s theological commitments to better understand his activism within the Southern Presbyterian Church during the period from 1942 to 1973. It argues that Bell viewed the conflict between theological conservatives and liberals in his denomination primarily as an argument over which aspects of their faith should receive the most emphasis. As against contrary emphases upon religious experience, the social implications of Christianity, and union with the Northern Presbyterian Church, Bell urged a return to the traditional set of emphases that had characterized the Southern Presbyterian tradition from its earliest days: Biblical authority, winsome evangelism, and unity around basic evangelical tenets.
