Description

In the Israel Museum in Jerusalem lies a 7th Century BCE sealstone marked "Aliyah the Maidservant of Hanamel." Its owner was evidently a pious, literate slave woman with an acute business sense, who was possibly part of the household of Jeremiah the prophet. Through her shrewd eyes, the reader enters the hidden world of women and slaves, and the public world of politics and prophecy, in the last days of the monarchy in Judah. Her memories encompass history from the time of the unquestioned might of Assyria, through the rise of Egypt and Babylon (modern Iran/Iraq), to the eventual destruction of Jerusalem--caught as usual in the middle. Her acquaintances include queens, kings, prophets, and, of course, the greatest prophet of his time: Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a man who accused Yahweh, "You seduced me, and I let you do it." He was tormented all his life by the conflict between his passionate love of God and his always unrequited desire for the love of his people. He was the only man in Hebrew Scripture commanded by divine revelation to be celibate, and the only one whose frustrations led him to pour out the longing of his warring emotions so baldly in his powerful poetry. His life and Aliyah's were dominated by the desperate conflict of the three great world powers of the day. During it, they saw their country destroyed and its people enslaved. They also saw--and assisted at--the birth of modern Judaism, insisting on individual responsibility and weaning religion from nationalism. Their story is one of a struggle for rebirth: the shattering of old expectations, the confronting of old fears and new terrors, and the discovery of the essential simplicity of love.
