This report presents a national snapshot of young children's health and development in Australia. This is the second national report of the Australian Early Development Index (AEDI), and draws upon assessments of 289,973 children in their first year of school. The AEDI examines five areas of early childhood development: physical health and wellbeing, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills (school-based), and communication skills and general knowledge. Comparisons are also included with findings from the first national report, which surveyed 261,147 children aged 5 years old in 2009, as well as for Indigenous language groups, country of birth, and states and territories. The report found that though the majority of these children are doing well on each of the five developmental domains of the AEDI, there are still children who are developmentally vulnerable as they enter school.
