Charles Henry Floyd was born in Medford Massachusetts in 1842 and he moved to Quincy Illinois prior to the Civil War to work as a clerk for a railroad. At the age of 19 he joined the 50th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company D, as a corporal at the beginning of the war in August 1861. He was promoted to sergeant a month before the battle of Shiloh and then to 2nd Lieutenant later in 1862. He mustered out at the end of the war in July 1865 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Toward the end of the war he served as an aide-de-camp to Brigadier General William Vandever and also to Colonel Richard Rowett. The 50th Illinois were part of Sherman and Grant's Army. Charles Floyd fought under Sherman at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Atlanta, Resaca, Allatoona, March to the sea, Siege of Savannah, Salkehatchie Swamps and Bentonville, and he was present at the surrender of Johnson and his army. Lieutenant Floyd was captured for three days during the Campaign of the Carolinas.Letters written by Charles Floyd during the Civil War to the Turner Family were donated to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield Illinois and have been referenced in two history books on the Civil War. Transcripts of two of his letters that he wrote from Corinth Mississippi to the Turner Family after the battle of Shiloh are included in this book.
