Smith Street sits on the outskirts of the small town of Burston, just inland from the north-east coast of Tasmania, Australia. The residents of Smith Street are a varied lot - a mix of ages, backgrounds and personalities. As in any suburban street, anywhere in the world, their lives are lived privately and publicly, irregardless of their choice. Kathy Smith inherited her home from her parents and has lived there most of her life. Her son, Robert, is about to move out a mere 'stone's throw' away, which is a bitter sweet blessing for her. Robert looks forward to spreading his wings, but his devious mate, Bazza, causes problems for him and his mum. Kathy's next door neighbour, John, has lived a private life to protect his homosexuality, yet nothing happens in Smith Street without him knowing. Helen, his long suffering friend and nearby neighbour, hears it all. Next door to John, are the Cabots. Joseph rules with an iron fist, but meets a sticky end at the hands of his wife. Across the road, from Kathy, elderly sisters have lived a life of self inflicted solitude, in their run-down mansion. Tragedy strikes them both, in an unexpected, and sad way. Poignant and gently humerous, this novel presents a moving portrait of the residents of one street, in a small, Tasmania town.
