Originally from Washington, D.C., Jason is a typical high school student now living in Madison, Wisconsin, with his mother, a professor at the university. However, their entire life is a lie. For the past eight years, they have been part of the Witness Protection Program. Jason's father was killed in D.C. shortly before he was to testify against the notorious MS-13 gang. The government sent Jason and his mother to Wisconsin to begin a new life, but they have never felt completely safe. When Jason's uncle requires a kidney transplant, Jason and his mother break the number one rule for families in the WPP: Never go back home. When this trip seems to have no ramifications, Jason begs his mom to go on a class trip. Destination: Washington, D.C. Although he senses someone has been tailing him in Madison, he ignores the warning and convinces his mom to let him go. As Jason tours the capital city with his classmates, he must come to terms with the fact he is indeed being tailed there as well. As the story culminates in a chase through Colonial Williamsburg, Jason realizes he has been betrayed by the one person who was supposed to protect him. Jean Ziegler is a middle school teacher in Madison, Wisconsin. She previously published two novels for teens: As Fate Would Have It and Over the Line. The latter was inspired by two former students.
