This really is a very fine anthology of creative writing and poetry by young people. The anthology is divided into seven chapters, four of which are dedicated to "poems on a theme." In the case of these, the students were presented with "an issue" or topic of some relevance to them. There are the "I AM" poems, which are based on the collection of black-and-white archival photographs, taken from the 20's thru the late 1940's, wherein Black men of all ages rose in a series of public demonstrations declaring, via sandwich-boards and placards, "I Am A Man!" The chapter is followed by the series of "R.E.S.P.E.C.T." poems, which are an extension of further conversations from the previous chapter, following on that theme. After a series of dialogues on poetic devices, such as "stream of consciousness" and discovering one's "Inner Voice," each student is given a candle, which is lit before him/her at their desk, and is encouraged to concentrate on the flame that appears within the flame. The "TALKING CANDLES" chapter is the poetic result of said assignment. In Mrs. Martinez's Global Studies class, the students were studying monarchies and reigns, so we decided to create our own "monarchies" via a poetic method. Using the Internet, we were able to locate the "official" crest and coat of arms of the students by their Spanish surnames. We printed these in black-and-white and had the students color and personalize them. They then wrote a poem in which they described their Reign - what type of ruler they might make. On computers, they exaggerated the font-text, and colorized the lettering of their poems, and printed the results onto iron-on stencils. The same was done for the crests. Ironing these onto their personal shirts, the students had a wearable-poem expounding the virtues of their "Reign," complete with a family crest. The following three chapters: the "AFTER-SCHOOL," "POETRY ELECTIVE," and "POETRY NATION" components are unique examples of principal Carmen Bardeguez-Brown's innovative commitment to fostering poetic expression among her students. The after-school program affords a published poet, such as myself, one-on-one time with individual students most interested in pursuing in-depth understanding and appreciation of poetry in general, as well as offering insight into their own personal writing experiences. The "Poetry Elective" unit, on the other hand, is offered as an in-school classroom experience in poetry. Its design is Socratic, so as to foster conversation, dialogue, debate, even banter on subjects of personal and social concern. "Poetry Nation" is the students' poetry reading series, conceived, in collaboration with the classes of Mrs. Viñas, as a means whereby the students may "give voice" to their writing, and to perform their poetry before a supportive audience of their peers in a classroom setting. The design of this anthology is such that its format encourages the students to "find" their literary and photographic contributions by perusing the various chapters. Following dictionary form, authors are listed within the chapters in alphabetical order. Thus, students who wrote several poems on topic, will find their submissions spread throughout these chapters - encouraging them to encounter other fellow students' contributions as well. Further, there is an index of Contributors wherein they can find the page listings on which their works appear.I am most graciously thankful for the forward thinking of principal Carmen Bardeguez-Brown. Without her apprecia-tion for poetry (she, being a poet herself), I would not be afforded the opportunity of returning to my Alma Mater as a published author, and to work with this young, impression-able, pensive generation. I believe that we need a Poet-in-Residence in every school building!~ Jesús Papoleto Meléndez, Poet-in-ResidenceSCHOOL FOR EXCELLENCE, 2015
