The novel opens just before the First World War, with the rise to fortune of Ada, a cunning and opportunistic young woman of irish convict stock on both sides of her family. Moving to Sydney and quickly establishing herself as a businesswoman, Ada marries and gains control over an orphanage. When a new foundling is brought in, Ada shows signs of affection towards the baby, which she quickly suppresses. The baby, given the name, John Usher after the hotel where he was found, is absorbed into the life of the orphanage. From this meagre start Jack usher makes a life for himself as an army sergeant and leads a platoon of raw recruits to Palestine, experiencing the dramas, confusions, dangers and petty absurdities of an army at war, while the tragedies of his past are never far behind him.
