Joseph Fisher has written poetry since his pre-teen years growing up in Waterville, Maine. Ahab's Leg contains a selection of his poems and haiku, both serious and humorous, that explore love and death, nature, spiritual redemption, exploring family roots in Alabama, living in Alaska, and his favorite novel, Moby Dick. His writing follows in the lyric poetry tradition exemplified by the likes of Gerard Manly Hopkins, Dylan Thomas and e.e. cummings - poets who play with the joyous, musical and sensual qualities of language. While still a teenager, this approach to poetry was solidified by a year of study in New York City with the renowned Filipino poet José Garcia Villa. An included essay recounts this experience and the lessons learned about the art of poetic craft revealed by Villa's comprehensive philosophy of poetry. Fisher went on to settle in the Pacific Northwest where he attended The Evergreen State College before moving to Alaska. He worked primarily as a truck driver and reconstructed an early settler's one-room log cabin atop Birch Hill outside of Fairbanks where he lived for twelve years. He also worked as a commercial salmon and tuna fisherman, laborer, carpenter, gold dredger, and dock worker, among other jobs before returning to school and earning an MA in English from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville followed by a Masters in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston. He then settled into a career as a digital-resources librarian, first at the Boston Public Library for ten years and then at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for another ten years. He currently resides with his wife in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
