Description

This dissertation makes an argument for rethinking settlement - both as an analytical category of interest to sociocultural and archaeological anthropologists, and also as a political category that forms the legal foundation of settler colonialism. I approach the problem of rethinking settlement by examining, perhaps counter-intuitively, the role that mobility has played in mediating socio-political relationships in Nova Scotia between the indigenous Mi'kmaq, the British Crown and the Catholic Church from the late eighteenth century to the present.
