Maggie Alley lives independently on her apple farm. Her mother died when she was a young girl. This left her father to cope with her strong willed character and the heartache of losing his wife. Due to financial hardships he left her with his sister-in-law to find work. For unknown reasons, he never contacts then or returns.As Maggie grows older she adjusts to being alone. She finds joy with the return of her beloved Kickapoo friends that migrate south every spring. She helps her aunt and cousin with their boarding house when the need arises. All is well in her day to day life until Doctor Gavin McCrea opens his medical practice in their town.Gavin is from the big city of Chicago. He was assigned by the Professional Ministry Team, (PMT), to practice in Maggie's town. Their initial meeting is a disaster with Maggie chasing Gavin and his friend from her farm only to discover they are staying with her aunt. As time goes by, they do become friends. Maggie still tries him with her never ending pranks but he deals with them one at a time. Through the ongoing teasing, Gavin falls in love with Maggie. Knowing Maggie doesn't trust anyone other than her aunt and cousin, he doesn't share his feelings in fear of losing her friendship.Gavin manages to convince Maggie to go to Chicago with him. It is there that Maggie sees Gavin for the gentle loving person he is. As she tries to sort out these new feelings, tragedy strikes tearing them apart. Once again, she is alone wondering what she had done that caused God to continue to take those she loved from her.
