Society isn't always welcoming of those that come across as different, and he'd experienced that in many different forms, from growing up in (and returning to) a home devoid of love and understanding, to being used as an emotional punching bag by teachers, former bosses, and even the law. Lifelong depression that had led nearly to institutionalization and suicide was still around. His battle with alcoholism, already two decades old, flared up again. His beloved sister passed away during the year.Through it all, Kennedy was his guiding light. She was the one that made Norman know that running off or giving up were no longer options. She was his new reason (Jennifer had been the first) to get up in the morning, give it his all for a day, then come home and hope to do it all again tomorrow.
