Description

Even after a career as an award-winning journalist, publishing a few books, and spending about a decade at the head of college classrooms, Jason Norman always knew there was something about himself just a tough...off.Yes, he'd felt out of place almost everywhere he'd been for his near-forty years. But around the time Norman finally received an answer, he'd found far higher priorities than articles and grades.First came his wife Jennifer, the love of his existence. Then, in May 2017, arrived the dream the pair had never thought would ever become real: their daughter, Kennedy. In comparison, Norman's other issue would become the lightest shade of pale.He was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a member of the lowest scale of autism. His social awkwardness and habits had made so many (including his wife, on occasion!) think he was nuts, but as tough as that was, now Norman had to find some way to set an example for his little lady. Determined to become any kind of father, Norman did what he often had when things got tough - sat down and expressed his thoughts on the page. It had always been an effective way to get the creativity going, and now it gave him a way to remember some of the greatest experiences a man can undergo. As those with Asperger's often do, Norman charged full-speed into his new project, piling up one impression, one experience after another as he, Jennifer, and Kennedy made it through their first year together. From the moment he learned Kennedy was coming until her first birthday, Norman compiled day after day, tooth after tooth, word after word ("Ma-ma!" came first!), and step after step as he watched his little girl totter toward toddlerhood. But along the way, Norman was forced to confront a past he'd tried to leave behind. Society isn't always welcoming of those that come across as different, and he'd experienced that in many different forms, from growing up in (and returning to) a home devoid of love and understanding, to being used as an emotional punching bag by teachers, former bosses, and even the law. Lifelong depression that had led nearly to institutionalization and suicide was still around. His battle with alcoholism, already two decades old, flared up again. His beloved sister passed away during the year.Through it all, Kennedy was his guiding light. She was the one that made Norman know that running off or giving up were no longer options. She was his new reason (Jennifer had been the first) to get up in the morning, give it his all for a day, then come home and hope to do it all again tomorrow. And all those tomorrows became this book.At times depressing and sometimes downright sad, but chock-full of humor and introspect and always with an enormously moving sense of humility, An Aspie Daddy is the story of a man who found hope in his family and his overdue diagnosis. It takes others inside an Aspie mind to see what's there and how valuable and welcome it can be. And it tells the story of a little girl who gave two parents the greatest reasons to be better people themselves. It discusses the joys of fatherhood (and husband-hood) in a way that few authors truly can. And it's a message of hope to members of the autism community to find and use their newfound gifts, and how lucky they truly are. Jason Norman is a college English professor, an award-winning news journalist, and author of five books, including this one. More importantly, though, he's the husband of Jennifer and father of Kennedy, with whom he lives in Chesapeake, Virginia
