Description

Most places around the world use rain barrels to collect water in preparation for times when it is scarce. New Orleans, Louisiana is different. The challenge is an abundance of water. In just three hours the city may experience up to 8-inches of rainfall, with an average of over five feet each year. Through a complex system of underground drainage pipes and canals, water is pumped over the levees into Lake Pontchartrain. Sometimes the amount of water overwhelms the pump system, causing the storm water to back flow and flood parts of the city. When the pumps catch up they also pull groundwater from the soil causing it to dry out and collapse. This leads to subsidence, or sinking, which puts pressure on the city's infrastructure and makes flooding more common. Combined with rising sea levels, faster strengthening hurricanes and the loss of wetlands, subsidence makes New Orleans one of the most vulnerable cities to climate change. Green Light New Orleans aims to alleviate these issues using recycled barrels, by capturing rainwater before it gets to the storm drains. Leveraging the city's love for art, each barrel is uniquely painted by schools and volunteer artists before going into the community. The program has already installed over 2,000 rain barrels and continues to be in high demand. This book highlights the unique water challenges experienced by New Orleans, what is currently being done to manage it and how shifting to strategies that embrace the abundance of water may ultimately save it from drowning. Your participation is part of the solution. This book is a beautiful coffee table book paying homage to New Orleans residents who have endured flooding for decades. It illustrates history and the background of the flooding issue and offers a practical way how to become part of the solution.
