Description

While living, working, and traveling throughout Japan I picked up a pencil and sketch pad to carry with me and spent time drawing scenes around the country including farmhouses, boats, and pine trees. Looking back some decades later at these sketches, watercolors, and even a published cartoon series which eventually emerged, it seemed to make sense to collect them all in one place. In addition, I had extensive unpublished notes from those years which add flavor and nuance to these drawings. Finally, having continued to visit Japan nearly each year for the last 25 years I have taken a number of recent photographs which amplify the drawings with the clarity only a shutter lens can provide thus adding to the beauty of a landscape once sketched so many years ago. Altogether, this collection provides the reader with a view into Japan at a particular time and place. Specifically, the period of the mid 1980s using a mixed mode of original artwork, writings, references, and photographs. To be fair I can be considered a more accomplished author than an artist with over 100 technical articles published and two engineering books as well. While my cartoon series was in fact published in a local magazine in Japan at the time they were developed, the artwork contained here has never been shared anywhere. This book contains 36 original drawings, watercolors, and manga (cartoons) of scenes and situations in Japan and over 15 original photographs taken in Japan. Many of the drawings and photographs reflect on each other and help to weave a narrative about the settings of the cities, countryside, and seaside of Japan. In my current work I express my artistic ability through technical drawings using computer software. However, I decided to be brave and share these works because when I discovered the materials in storage, they brought back positive memories and they seemed to evoke a time and a place and tell a story. As I had very limited art training received in High School the quality of some of the pieces included here may be considered variable, but they are stylistically consistent. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the overall mosaic of the text, artwork, photographs, and supporting materials will all work together to provide the reader with an enjoyable means of finding insights into a past journey of both time and space into the heart of Japan and of a sojourner them-self. This book also explores the nature of drawing, Sumi-e painting, its relationship to Zen, and a variety of aspects of life in Japan and Japanese culture. These observations, reflections, and stories then support the drawings and illustrations and provide a conceptual level of understanding to the visual experience provided in the book for the reader's consideration.
